Your House Style

When you're looking for a new condominium, Toronto has many offerings but all in the same modern luxury style. This is excellent if you are competing with many others for ownership of a luxury condo, but what if you would like to have some choice? Then you're better off moving to or looking at a vacation or second home in Tempe, Arizona. No matter what type of house style you like, be it a bungalow, loft or luxury condo, you are sure to find your ideal real estate in Tempe, Arizona. Here is a brief overview of some of the home styles you might expect to find here in Tempe.

There are two major factors which play into which styles of home will be available in a given city. One is the date on which the city was founded and the other is the city's geography. Tempe was founded in 1865, therefore you can expect that the home styles that were popular in subsequent years will be present there, and not older ones unless they were built as an eccentric throwback. The landscape is generally flat desert made into an agricultural area by the Salt River, so there don't expect to find printing factory lofts like there would be in Detroit and other industrial cities.

The home styles that were popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s, like Victorian, Beaux Arts, and Tudor Revival, do not play heavily into Tempe's housing market simply because the town's early years were as a frontier settlement, so there wasn't much use for large houses. As the town came into its own a few years later, however, Frank Lloyd Wright was rising to prominence. So while Mississauga real estate was still absorbed in imitating English home styles, Tempe builders were experimenting with the simple, low, compact stylings of Prairie architecture, which suited the climate and geography of their city.

Also during that period, other compact styles that were more economical to build than multi-story Victorians were also rising to popularity. Therefore you can expect to find some examples of Arts and Crafts, Spanish Mission, and American Foursquare architecture in your search for a Tempe home. Many of these styles were unique to the United States, and would not be found if you were to search for a Brampton home for sale instead, so they offer a degree of uniqueness you may find appealing.

The postwar period after 1945 brought with it a building boom all across the United States, and Tempe was not excluded. Homes for returning soldiers needed to be built quickly, so they favored simple, affordable ranch styles that particularly suited Tempe's wide-open spaces. Today, modern developers build everything from showy McMansion type suburban homes popular with Scarborough homes developers to sprawling red-tiled Spanish and Mediterranean revival style homes that play into the desert architecture theme. Many of these are subdivided and sold as condos. What you won't find many of are the tall glass condo towers that populate big cities, because Tempe is not quite that built-up yet.
